The refurbishing of a new area encompassing the Box Office, the Subscribers' Service Desk and the Bookshop
Bismarckstraße 35, 10627 Berlin/Germany
In the foyer on the ground floor of the German Opera House in Berlin could be found at the outset of work individual pieces of furniture dating back to the 1960s. But now these rather mundane desks and sideboard units, mirroring the plain and simple style of post-war modernism, have been integrated into a newly designed area positioned between the entrance and the cloakroom. The sideboards with their glazed tops have been given a face-lift, redesigned and each linked to a back wall panel by means of two shelves. The desks were given a new home in the completely redesigned area that houses the Bookshop, the Subscribers' Service Desk and the Box Office. Rather like a practical island unit, this zone has been set up within the flowing lines of the open-plan foyer area and perches on a low platform with underfloor heating. It includes four computer workstations, storage space for technical equipment, files and the like and it also boasts a Visitor Service Desk that spills over into the main foyer area. An additional feature in the spacious foyer is a square, free-standing column which serves as an audio-visual information centre with an integrated PC and which is fitted on two sides with a touch screen, headphones and plexiglass brochure holders.
During every phase of this project, the Paschen team collaborated closely with the staff of the Opera House responsible for this undertaking.
